The Samye Ling monastery was started in the old Johnstone family shooting lodge in 1965. Beside this old building is a new modern temple and dormitories under construction (2010). From the outside the temple is a grey breeze block edifice. From the courtyard the temple reveals itself with golden ornaments. Before entering people are asked to remove footwear, leave offerings outside and take no photographs. The notice board at the main door explains all.
