The 12-foot stone cross dates to the late 11th - early 12th century. The cross originally stood in Kilfenora in in north west Clare County. It was brought to Killaloe in 1821 by Bishop Mant who was an amateur archaeologist. It then stood at the episcopal residence in nearby Clarisford. It was brought into the cathedral in 1934 and was embedded into the walls. During a restoration project in 2001 it was restored to a freestanding cross and placed in its location in the nave of the cathedral.
