Kampong Cham is the most populous province of the twenty four provinces of Cambodia (plus the national capital, Phnom Penh), with 1.6 million people (out of a national figure of 15 million). The capital city of the province is also named Kampong Cham, and is situated on the Mekong River. The city lies two hours by car or bus to the north east of Phnom Penh. The majority of the population live an agricultural, rural life.

Tourism is not a significant factor in the provincial economy, however, there is a range of hotels and restaurants, plus a few things to see and do. The town tourism office is back from the Mekong opposite a park and playground area. Due to there being a substantial swimming pool in the front grounds of the centre, I strongly suspect that this was not always its purpose.

When I visited on a week day there was only one staffer present, with limited English, who did hand me a slew of newly printed tourism brochures. There is also a newly constructed small tourism office building to one side of the older buildings. I suspect that this will become the new tourism office, and perhaps the current building and pool will return to their original function, no doubt to the betterment and happiness of the town's young folk.
