Kampong Cham is the capital city of the province of the same name, located ~125kms to the north east of Phnom Penh, on the Mekong River. The province is the most populous in Cambodia, however, the vast majority of the population live a rural, agricultural lifestyle. The city itself has a population in the tens of thousands. Slightly south of the town, in the middle of the Mekong, is the inhabited island of Koh (island) Pen. (note: various spellings of the island name exist. I am using the transliteration used locally.)

This island is reached, from Kampong Cham, by two means. During the dry season, when the River is low, the locals build a 'bamboo bridge' across the water. There is a photo of this, obtained from the local tourist office, in the gallery. Second, when the river is high, during the rainy season, when I visited, a ferry is used. This ferry departs from a landing place on the river and makes a 20 minute or so trip to the island.

Unfortunately, I did not have time to make the trip myself. If you do so you will find that the ferry engine is just a little noisy, that the schedule is when there are enough people waiting patiently on the boat to make the journey financially viable, and that the ferry runs from first to last light. Expect to share your space with pigs (non-house trained), teenager boys with their motorbikes, and school students clutching their books and bags. (No gift shops or restaurants on board.)

The waymark was made at the town ferry point.
