The line links the Low Town of Bridgnorth, adjacent to the River Severn, with the High Town. The funicular opened July 7, 1892. Originally it was a water operated funicular in that water was pumped to the upper car until it was heavy enough to pull the lower car up the hill as it was itself lowered and then the water was pumped from the new lower car to the new upper car to repeat the process. The railway is now operated electrically. It is an important infrastructure to the city and operates 362 days a year (it is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day). The cost of a round trip is £1, one-way tickets are not available.
