The Great Gatehouse - Bristol, England - Gothic Architecture on Waymarking.com

The earliest portions of the gatehouse were built around 1170 to serve as the main entrance gate for the monastic precinct, of the St Augustine's Abbey, giving access to its courtyard. The earliest portion feature two Norman style gates, a larger one of horses and carriages, and a smaller pedestrian gate. The gate house and tower were additions by abbot John Newland around 1500 and were built in a late Perpendicular English Gothic style. The gatehouse was one of the abbey's monastic buildings which survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries, after which in 1542 the abbey became Bristol Cathedral. The gatehouse now serves as the diocesan office.
