At the corner of Merchant and Bethel Streets in downtown Honolulu stands the noble Kamehameha V Post Office Building. Constructed over 1870 and 1871, the building is formed from pre-cast concrete blocks, and remains the oldest public building made of reinforced concrete in the United States. Built under the reign of Kamehameha V, who commissioned many public buildings, the main postal functions moved in 1922. It has since served as a tax office, cultural arts office, and now houses the administrative offices of the Hawaii State Library.
