Although there are no strong evidences that just Colloseum was the place where Roman Christians were persecuted - burned alive, crucified, and “Damnatio ad bestia” (fed to wild animals), the persecutions are historical true and one can hardly imagine other place, where the described persecutions could take place in ancient Rome. As it is always fitting and proper to commemorate the slaughtered innocents the pope Benedict XIV (r.1740-1758) dedicated just the Colosseum to the memory of the Christian martyrs killed in Rome during early Christian period.

The cross erected here, above the Colosseum arena thus reminds the suffering of the early Christians in Rome.
