This statue of Hanuman is found in the town of Kampong Cham, approximately 125kms north east of Phnom Penh. The statue itself is in a small grassed area, located at a traffic junction, near the Mekong River. The inscription on the plinth states that the statue was dedicated on the 1st August 1992, and paid for by Mr 'Ha-when-khun', and lists his extended family. The cost of the statue is 2,500,000 reil (which equals in 2010 to us$625).
Hanuman is a Hindu deity, a vanara, which are creatures with a monkey like form, who possess a combative and mischievous nature. They exist to serve Rama in his battle against the demon king Ravana. Hanuman's position is that of a general, commanding his fellow vanara.
