This quarter section and photograph commemorate a national champion Shumark Oak that was one of many large trees blown over by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Many record size trees continue to flourish in the Monument. Champions grow best in undisturbed forests with rich soils, an ideal climate, and plenty of moisture. Champions die as a result of old age, high winds, lightning strikes, or disease; opening the way for new record setters to take their place.
