After graduating he returned to Buenos Aires. He was in love with his second cousin Maria Sanchez, known in the Buenos Aires society by Mariquita, daughter of the wealthy Spanish Cesareo Sanchez de Velasco. Although it was returned, the family objected, so they decided to use the Viceroy Rafael de Sobremonte and thirteen days into the trial received his endorsement, so almost a year later, on June 29, 1805 finally got married. They had five children, Clementine, John, Magdalena, Florence and Albina.

In Buenos Aires, was appointed Captain of the Port in 1806. In the British invasion had an outstanding performance in Montevideo, where he was wounded, and the Río de la Plata, where he captured several enemy launches, reaching the rank of lieutenant of the Spanish Navy frigate.
