In 1854, Columbia County was created, being formerly a part of Washington County. After a heated battle St. Helens was named the county seat in August 1903. In 1906, the courthouse was built of locally quarried stone at 1st Street on the river bank. Four years later the clock and the bell were installed. The bell can be heard from three miles away.Directions: From Highway 30 in St. Helens turn onto Columbia Blvd. heading East towards the Columbia River. Continue approximately 1.5 miles and turn right onto South 1st Street. Go approximately 0.1 miles and turn left onto St. Helens Street. Continue straight ahead into the parking lot for the County Courthouse, which will be on the right. Parking lot is between the Columbia River and the Courthouse.
