Nathan the Wise is a play by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, published in 1779. It is a fervent plea for religious tolerance. Its performance was forbidden by the church during Lessing's lifetime and along with another of his works.
This sculpture was made by Erich Schmidtbochum in 1961.

Nathan der Weise ist der Titel und die Hauptfigur eines fünfaktigen Ideendramas von Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, das 1779 veröffentlicht und am 14. April 1783 in Berlin uraufgeführt worden ist.
„Nathan der Weise“ war Lessings letztes Werk.
Geschaffen hat Erich Schmidtbochum diese Bronzeskulptur 1961. Seine Werke zeichnen sich durch vereinfachte kubische Formgebung aus, die jedoch nie das Anatomische zugunsten einer völligen Abstraktion verlässt. Er verstarb in Braunschweig; begraben ist er in Wolfenbüttel, wo sich auf dem Friedhof auch sein Ehrengrab befindet.
