This geodetic monument is located along the beautiful western coastline of Faial Island. It was placed by the Portuguese Cadastral and Cartographic Institute (IPCC) on the island of Faial during 1997. Although a relatively new monument, it already has acquired an important history. It was one of several monuments used to estimate the coseismic displacements resulting from the 1998 Faial earthquake, which killed eight people and left 1,000 homeless.
