Able to carry 20 passengers and, if space is available, bikes, this ferry runs every 20mins or so, Monday to Saturday, between West Lynn and Kings Lynn across the River Great Ouse. At the West Lynn terminal are passenger facilities, toilets and waiting rooms whilst the large car park is free. The facilities at the Kings Lynn end are primitive, just a shelter provided at the quay end of Ferry Lane, off King Street. The cost is £1 for adults, concessions are available, and bikes are free.
A ferry has been operating here for over 700 years and is still used today by commuters and shoppers to get to and from Kings Lynn. It is currently operated by S.N. Kingston Marine Services but does not run on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Years Day.
Little has changed with this service over the 700 years, with the exception of safety; in 1796 for example, 22 of the 30 passengers drowned when the ferry hit a barge.
The ferry is navigated across the Great Ouse with skill born of long experience, moving upstream against the falling tide and downstream against the rising tide.
Timings are:- West Lynn depart 0700 0720 0740 then continually until 0900, then every 20 minutes until 1700, after that continually until 1800.
King's Lynn Quayside departures operate as soon as the ferry has taken on new passengers with its last run at 1805 .
