The Apollo 14 mission was the last of the manned lunar landings in the Apollo space program. On that mission, which lasted ten days in February, 1971, Astronauts Alan Shepherd, Stuart Roosa and Edgar Mitchell carried with them a few seeds of the Coastal Redwood from San Mateo County, California.
This Coastal Redwood tree, known as a moon tree, is located on the north side of the Capitol Building at the corner where the Security Annex juts out from the Capitol. The tree was planted in Capitol Park in 1976. Today the tree is about 120 feet tall and has a canopy of approximately 40 feet. The tree was featured on Huell Howser's travelogue show, "California's Gold", in 2008.
