Brockhole was built as a grand house for the Gaddum family in 1895. The fashion at the time was to plant trees from other parts of the world. This redwood overshadows the visitor centre shop.

Many of the trees in the gardens at Brockhole are over a hundred years old. On the slope in front of the house is a Monkey Puzzle tree. In Britain prior to 1850, it had been known as "Joseph Bank's Pine" or "Chile Pine", though it is not a true pine.

This Redwood has the characteristic soft bark of all Redwoods. The leaves are typical, but on this example they are too high up to reach. Fallen ones on the ground provide evidence. It stands alone between two Caucasian Firs. All three are giants.
