Russell Harty was born in Blackburn in 1934. He attended Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School and went on to gain a 1st class degree in English Literature from Exeter College, Oxford.

Harty’s early career was an English and drama teacher at Giggleswick school, where he tutored the future TV presenter Richard Whiteley. During the 1960’s his career moved towards broadcasting when he became a radio producer for the BBC Third Programme.

Harty’s first TV break came in 1970 when he presented the arts programme Aquarius for London Weekend Television. By 1973 he moved on to being a chat show host on ITV with his own series “Russell Harty Plus”. Russell Harty became a rival to Michael Parkinson in the growth of the chat show in the UK. In 1981 Harty moved to the BBC to present an early evening chat show. The show gained some notoriety when Grace Jones slapped Harty in the face for allegedly turning his back on her.

His career was on the up when he started work on a series entitled “Russell Harty’s Grand Tour” in 1987. Unfortunately, a few episodes into the series Russell Harty contracted hepatitis B and died in Leeds in June 1988.
