The Victorian villas on The Terrace were designed for the Owners of the Kendal- Windermere Railway Company. They were reputedly designed by Pugin and constructed by local builders Pattinsons. When originally constructed in 1856 the Terrace would have had gardens that were terraced down to Windermere station.

The Terrace consists of three grade 2 listed villas, Alice Howe, Boston House, and Bannerigg. The fireplaces in Alice Howe and Boston House are small scale replicas of fireplaces within the Palace of Westminster.
