The ancient town of Olomouc lies in the heart of the so-called Haná region (Moravia). Its history dates back to the 10th century AD when it became an important trade crossing-point. It has the second most significant collection of historical monuments in the country after Prague. The second oldest university in the Czech lands was founded in Olomouc in the year 1573.Olomouc was considered the capital of Moravia from the Luxemburgian period up until the 17th century.

From 13th century is red-white chechkered Moravian eagle herldic symbol of Olomouc. The letters SPQO are located in each corner of the flag.
SPQO is the abbreviation of "Senatus PopulusQue Olomouciensis" (according the similar abbreviation SPQR ("Senatus PopulusQue Romanus") which was used in ancient Rome.
