Hermit's Rest is a structure designed by Mary Jane Colter, used as a rest stop for visitors on the west side of the Grand Canyon. There is currently a lookout here, complete with concession stand, binoculars for viewing the canyon interior, and historical signs. It is only accessible by bike, hiking, or shuttle bus. Personal vehicles are not permitted on the road. You can take the red shuttle bus from the Maswik/Bright Angel Lodge area directly to the Hermit's Rest stop, or get off at one of several lookouts along the way then hop back on the bus the next time it comes by. During the summer months, the red bus stops here often, but be sure to check the hours so you don't get left way out here and have to walk back!
The Hermit's Rest Arch is made of large rocks stacked in just the right manner to form an arch about 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide. It is a beautiful natural arch located near a lookout with a phenomenal view.
According to the NCHGC website:
The pathway leading to the rest stop begins at a small stone arch with a bell at the top that Colter found at an old Spanish mission, though because of vandalism in recent years the path has been moved so that visitors can no longer walk through the archway.
