This tree was originally a gift from the people of California to the people of Oregon, when they opened their new capitol building in 1938. In 1998 the tree was named in honor of Joel Spalding, a lifetime medical professional and advocate of mental health treatment. The tree is easily accessed from any of the surrounding streets.
