Raurimu township was built near the Raurimu Spiral, a notable feat of civil engineering consisting of loops and tunnels constructed to overcome a 132 m height difference on the North Island Main Trunk Railway around 1885.
In its heyday the town had a greengrocers and three grocery stores and picture theatre for the railway workers and forestry workers who lived in the area. Today it is a quiet village, with no shops, just a few local residents and holiday homes for skiers at the nearby mountains. There is an interesting little cemetery containing very old graves.
The old Avery Hardoll petrol pump is sited outside the front of a small building that was one of the old original stores. It probably sold Europa petrol, although the pump is not marked with a brand name.
