In the middle of the 18.th century, there was only a slowly growing loose system of scattered farmhouses outside the city wall in the place of the present district. The development of the district and the growth of the population was given a new impetus by the building of the Great Boulevard. The district was named after the wife of the emperor Francis Joseph I in 1882.
The new Catholic church has been completed in 8 years on Poorhouse Square according to the plans of Imre Steindl, the chief architect of the Parliament. The church was dedicated to Saint Elizabeth (1207-1231), daughter of the Hungarian king Andrew II. The princess was still a child when she arrived to the castle of Wartburg, to the court of her future husband. Already in her lifetime she excelled by her benevolent activities and she was revered as a holy person. It is she who is represented by the statue erected on the square in front of the church. The building of the church bears the characteristic features of early French Gothic architecture as well as traits of typically German forms, but they also fused into an individual style as a result of Steindl's design. The two 76 m high spires of the church were built in a manner stretched apart one from the other for a large space was needed for the side entrances and for the extension of the organ loft. The fronting is decorated by a rose window in a Gothic style frame and on the pediment, the figures of the Virgin Mary, the Patron of Hungary as well as those of Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislas can be seen together with the national and the town arms.
