Christopher Howes was a 'de-miner' working in Cambodia to remove land mines left behind by the various wars, which have occurred in Cambodia over the previous few decades.
In 1996 Mr Howes was kidnapped by remnants of the Khmer Rouge. He was held hostage for a short time, but then murdered. His actions, while held captive, contributed to the release of his fellow Cambodian team members, who were kidnapped along with him. In 2008 three of his murderers were sentenced to twenty years (which seems to be the maximum penalty allowed) imprisonment.
A road is now named in his honour in Phnom Penh. It is in a prestigious part of the city, running westwards from Wat Phnom (the legendary foundation point of the city). It also runs in parallel with Daun Penh Drv (Daun Penh was the woman, who according to legend, founded the city). Between the two roads is a small green area. The waymark point was made at the default image sign.
RIP.
