Sad to say, this rather impressive building no longer serves the train travelling public of Phnom Penh and Cambodia. In fact, no trains roll in Cambodia in the year 2010, however, this may change. There is 'talk' of reopening the line to Thailand (closed due to the Vietnam war and never reopened), and there is also 'talk' of a Chinese government funded rail line from China to Singapore. Interesting if that happens. I believe that the Cambodian rail system will be reactivated, rail is an excellent means of moving people and goods, however, I do not expect this to happen soon.

When I visited in August 2010 rolling stock was visible behind the empty station, trains and carriages in some number (pic in gallery). There was no one there I could speak to, and the guards refused a polite request from me to wander 'behind' the station to get a closer look, thus I could ascertain the status of this infrastructure.

The building itself is rectangular, several stories high, and empty. There is a locked grill over all the entrances, and a sign saying that only those authorised to do so may enter the station—I suspect that the homeless had been squatting. Interestingly, inside the station is a large (several metres on a side) model of the station (pic in gallery). Outside the station is a large, paved open area, once filled with people and vehicles, now near empty.

I could find no online history of the station, nor were there plaques visible, however, the station resembles in design the mid 1930s, art deco, central market of Phnom Penh. The station was most likely built around the same time by the same French colonial government.
