Millennium Park - Boston, MA - Made for the Millennium on Waymarking.com

In the West Roxbury section of Boston is Millennium Park, which is a multi-use park at the edge of the city, by the Charles River. A plaque at the upper parking lot states that this park was dedicated in the year 2000.

The park has several athletic fields. One was used for soccer practice at the time. In the other, a family was flying kites. At the base of the mound is a parking lot and access to the canoe launch, so that people can paddle in the Charles River, which, at this stretch, is in good condition and has many beautiful views across cattail wetlands.

The park has several trails that circle the mound, and if that isn't enough, there is a bridge over a runoff stream that connects to other trails. One trail goes east toward a cemetery, then to the site of Brook Farm. The other continues north along the Charles.

The mound mentioned is actually the cap to a landfill. This was once the landfill to West Roxbury (now a part of the city of Boston), called the Gardner Street Dump. The dump was closed and capped with sediment from the highway excavation known as "The Big Dig." The top is now planted with grass and small shrubs.

On one site, it is mentioned that a kite flying championship is held each summer.

The area around the mound is now a wooded "urban wild." There is evidence of its use as a border to the landfill, however.

But, it's now used for healthy activities!
