Commercial service at Raleigh-Durham Airport began in May, 1943. Eastern Airlines was the first major airline operating out of RDU. In the mid-1980's, American Airlines built a terminal and made RDU a one of their hub airports. American still operates a a daily nonstop flight to London's Heathrow Airport. In 2010 Southwest Airlines became the largest commercial carrier operating at RDU.
