This Wat is in the 'old' part of the town, next to the river. It has been extensively refurbished in recent years, and is well on its way to becoming a 'tourist' Wat. With that being said, it houses a number of centuries old Buddhist artefacts and images. It is certainly worth a visit if you are in town.
There are several historical signs in the Wat grounds. The principal such is the default image for this waymark. The history and background of the Wat are described. In summary:
"The Wat was founded 1500 AD, by the Cambodian king Ang Chan, in order to teach Buddhism, and to provide lodging for monks visiting the city."
I investigated this king and this period of Cambodian history, little is known, and less is certain.

Buddhism continued to flourish in Cambodia in the sixteenth century. King Ang Chan (1516-1566), a relative of King Dhammaraja, was a devout Buddhist. He built pagodas in his capital and many Buddhist shrines in different parts of Cambodia.
