This 3,120 pound globe defies our conception of physics. Amazingly, with just the touch of your finger, you can rotate the black sphere in any direction. It sits in a small amount of water in the fountain. The continents on the globe are etched into the black stone in rough white outlines. My kids enjoyed trying to recognize the different countries on the sphere.

Text on plaque:

The Millennium Floating Fountain
The solid black granite sphere weighs 3120 pounds and is 40 inches in diameter. The sphere was quarried on the Isle of Taivassalo off
the coast of Finland. The granite base which weighs 5,400 pounds
was quarried close to the village of Sarri near the town of Imatra,
Finland. Geologist believe the base and sphere stones to be around
2 billion years old.

The sphere and its base were ground and polished on specialized machinery over a four month period. The two stones fit together within 1/25 of a millimeter tolerance. The sphere floats on a thin layer of recirculated water (as little as 10 P.S.I.). A touch of the hand can change the direction of the sphere's rotation. Am artistic representational map of the world is etched into the surface of the sphere with a star representing Amarillo, Texas. The creator and manufacturers of the stone is Sorvikivi Oy (Turned Stone Co.1) of Savitaipale, Finland.
