Virunum
Virunum was founded in the middle of the first century A.D. It was planned in the period of emperor Claudius as a follow-up from the city at the Magdalensberg, situated a few kilometers east.
Virunum was the capital of the roman province Noricum and administrated an area of about a third of today's Austria.
In the heyday of the second and third century the city was the economic and cultural center of southeastern Alps. The settlement was abandoned in the sixth Century during the invasion of the barbarians.
The map of Virunum was reconstructed through archaeological excavations and aerial photography and shows a rectangular road system with regular residential buildings (insulae), a central forum with Capitol temples and other public buildings such as a stage and the amphitheater. To date - largely undeveloped - is the ancient city of Virunum a major source for the history of the province of Carinthia, which needs to develop in many ways.

The Amphitheater
It was built about 131A.D and measures about 108m x 46m and has a long-oval shape that differs from the usual elliptical floor plans of the Roman amphitheater. Around the central battlefield of the arena wall, two parallel rings run at a distance of 4.5 to 5.5 m, which are preserved in part to a height of 4 meters. In between are located at regular intervals ranging from an average of 2.5 m transverse and radial walls, which served as supports for wooden bleachers. The rise in spectator stands were added to wood racks and could accommodate approximately 3000-4000 visitors.

You can visit the amphitheater only with a guided tour (at weekends only with registration. Therefore you have to register yourself by telephone (04224/2255) or by email (magdalensberg@landesmuseum-ktn.at)!)!
