In New Bedford, in the downtown section of the city, is a building that was formerly occupied by Citizens National Bank, but is now occupied by Freestone's City Grill.
The building is at the corner of William Street and Second Avenue and is by the New Bedford National Historic Park Visitor Center, another converted bank and old courthouse.
The building's history can be found on Freestone's web site. The building was originally built and used as Citizens National Bank in 1877. It had a beautiful marble floor. Also, it had a Presidents Office that had a long fireplace and mantle that still is in the building. On the outside is a freestone facade. Since then, there have been two fires in the building: one in 1934, when the Acuschnet Cooperative Bank occupied it, destroying the third floor; and one in 1951 when the restaurant, Haskel's occupied it, scorched pillars in the dining room that can be seen, today. In 1978, the original owners of the restaurant to be named "Freestone's," named after the features on the building's facade, and after a change of hands in 2006, continues to operate, today. Inside the restaurant, there are modern sculptures, and the reception desk was a pulpit from a former Congregational Church in the city.
