When Rydal Hall's gardens were refurbished between 2005 and 2007, the head gardener Tom Attwood, created this side project with no funding. School children and locals became involved in reusing the former kitchen garden to grow their own vegetables.

Only a small area on a slope is used for the vegetable garden. The majority is now a field for camping, because it is flatter. Through grants the greenhouse has been restored and a poly tunnel built. Beside the poly tunnel is an apple orchard with native Cumbria apple varieties. Chickens scrat around in the small orchard. A shed with information boards and somewhere to shelter from the rain is just inside the deer and sheep proof gate. All the work for this vegetable garden is done in people's spare time by community members from neighbouring villages.

From Rydal Hall "Community Vegetable Garden set in the Old Walled Kitchen Garden. It includes an orchard planted with 30 northern varieties of apple dating back to the 1850's and a plethora of flowers and vegetables growing alongside each other. "
