The museum features over 50 large models of merchant ship from the Middle Ages to the present. The permanent exhibition has a focus on trade and the connections between the different means of transport.
Basel has the only port in Switzerland that has a navigable connection to the sea. About 15% of the Swiss foreign trade are using the ports of Basel. And it is the port of registry of the ship of the Swiss merchant navy, although they are all in fact too large to make their way to their home port 500 miles upstream.
