This is the most basic of campgrounds and contains no RV sites or caravan hookups but rather is just a piece of land adjacent to a Deer farm and the national park that some years ago was donated to The Department of Conservation for the use of camping and picnics and contains a toilet block and a water tank - and that’s about it. The ground does have 1 or 2 picnic tables and really is more suited for those wishing to tent it for a night or 2. A neat place to stay if you want to wake up to the sounds of a farm as well as some Native Fauna as well as a lot of rain - it rains here frequently. If you want to stay closer to the lake then there is campsites of the same nature closer to the lake about 80 metres from the boat ramp but the sand flies do tend to be more prolific at this site and it sees less sunshine due to the envelopment by the surrounding trees. I have spent lots of time at the Hauroko picnic area and enjoyed it due to it's infrequent usage due to the fact that there is little else to do here except be bored and get away from telephones, computers, electricity and television. There is a small toilet block here as well as a water tank with a tap sticking out of it that 'was' suitable for drinking. If you are venturing to Lake Hauroko, (New Zealands deepest Lake), for any reason you will undoubtably notice this site on your left as you are about to enter the National Park. The Lake Jetty is 6 kms further on through Native Beech Forest on a gravel road. Fees for staying here at the campground are based on an honesty system and there is a slot in which to deposit this.
