Looking for something to do with excess milk, it was proposed that a cooperative be formed. Ninety-four farmers jumped on board - at an annual cost of $5 per cow plus a cord of wood to fuel the boiler. The intrepid 94 purchased the village creamery (built in 1893) and began producing butter.
In 1930, they hired their first cheesemaker. They have been producing award-winning cheese ever since.
Now merged with Agri-Mark, the cooperative boasts over 1,500 family-farm members.
