Mountain Lake Centennial
1886 - 1986
We the people of Mountain Lake dedicate "Centennial Square" to
our hardy pioneer fathers, our present population and to all
future generations.
The railroad company played a leading part in locating the town
site in the late 1800s midway between St. Paul Minnesota and
Sioux City Iowa. The town was to be named Midway. Wm.
Mason, the first settler on the "Mountain Island", won the two year
dispute and "Mountain Lake" was incorporated in July 1886.
Freedom and the fertile land brought an influx of Russian-
German speaking Lutheran and Mennonite farmers and craftsman
who settled this area, Many of the family names remain.
