The Person:
Dema Guinn was raised in Exeter, California, where she met her husband, Kenny at age 7. They began dating as juniors in high school and married on July 7, 1956 in Reno. They have two children, Jeff and Steve. Mrs. Guinn has been active in community activities including the Boy Scouts and youth athletic programs, and was responsible for the completion of the interior decoration of the renovated Governor's Mansion.
As the wife of Nevada governor Kenny Guinn, Dema Guinn, served as the State First Lady from 1999 to 2006. Dema Guinn was a strong supporter of the Nevada State Museum in Carson City before and throughout her tenure as Nevada's First Lady. Always an avid supporter of culture in Nevada, Mrs. Guinn was a member and honorary chair of the committee that commissioned the Sarah Winnemucca statue for the United States Capitol and the Nevada State Capitol.
The Building:
The steel and glass concourse connects the
Nevada State Museum with its North Building while also serving as a changing exhibit area. This is a single-level transparent building with a distinctive right angle triangular-shaped volume that serves as the main entry and atrium area. It resembles a modern reinterpretation of an 1800's mine head frame, which reflects Nevada's rich history in mining. Nevada is known as "The Silver State." The concourse also acts as a transitional area, physically and aesthetically, linking a 19th century limestone building and two 20th century structures.
The official naming of the Dema Guinn Concourse occurred on June 19, 2009 with a reception and dedication ceremony.
