from http://www.maisongomin.com/maison-gomin-historique.html :

Former women's prison, this imposing building was constructed to improve the conditions of detention of prisoners, which until then had been held in the same prisons as men. At that time, the prison is away from the city and residential areas. The building bears the name of refuge when Notre Dame-de-la-Merci, until it was renamed in 1968 Maison Gomin in memory of Dr. Anet Gomin. The surgeon and herbalist at times had made a grant of land in the châtellerie Coulonge in 1664 which was built Maison Gomin.

For over 40 years therefore, the house remains the responsibility of the "soeurs du Bon-Pasteur". It then compares the lives of prisoners to life in boarding school. Subsequently, his administration is transferred to the Department of Justice. Having served its prison until 1992, the Maison Gomin evokes an important step in the evolution of Quebec prisons.

Since its construction, and even today, the building, by its architecture, has deeply influenced the imagination of nearby residents who called colloquially "the castle".

Today, with the new role of the Maison Gomin, its new owners restore the population of Quebec, a jewel of their city.
