North eastern Thailand has a sizeable number of Khmer era, stone religious structures, of various sizes, states of repair, and prominence. These date from the time, ~1,000 years previously, when the Khmer empire covered this region. This particular Prasat is the oldest of these, hence the first such in Thailand. This name of this prasat is Prasat Phumphon.
According to the information plaque at the site, this Prasat dates to the 7th–8th century AD period, and is constructed in the Prei Khmeng stule (637-707 CE). This provenance comes from the Thai Fine Arts Department and the Surin Province Museum. This is certainly early than any other Kymer site I have seen in this region.
In itself the Prasat is in a good state of repair, it has a rectangular layout, oriented north-south, with a central building and smaller around. The central building, the Prang, has an east facing door. The site is located ~20kms from the Cambodian border, and ~50kms from the provincial capital city of Surin.
