Today, the Araucariaceae Conifer can be found only in Australia and South America. But many millions of years ago, it was native to Europe too, as this petrified tree trunk shows.
It was found in a quarry in nearby Rüdigsdorf. We don't know when it was found, but the quarry closed in 1822, so it must have been here in the center of Gnandstein for quite a while.
