The Elkton Community Education Center features a wonderful butterfly garden and
a focus on butterflies among its many attractions.
The center is allowed to raise and release the following butterflies: "painted lady, American painted lady, West Coast painted lady, red admiral, monarch, mourning cloak, Western tiger swallowtail, cabbage white and orange sulfur. All of the butterflies have been seen at the ECEC site, but only a few exist well in captivity in our flight room. Students spend the summer attending to the life cycle of painted ladies and monarchs."
From ECEC's web pages:
"Butterfly and hummingbird gardens attract many colorful flying creatures. ECEC was featured in a 2005 Sunset magazine as “one of the five best places to see butterflies.” The reason was given that one can see more flying outside than in the screen room. In July, the gardens virtually hum with activity. Many photography clubs come and stay the day to capture the diverse colors and shapes of this lively garden scenery."
