"There's life on the river- in addition to paddlers- but much of it remains hidden from view.

Basement Tenants
Thymallus arcticus
Arctic grayling need clear water, which is not how you'd describe this glacial river in the summer. But as winter sets in and the glacier stops melting, the water clears up.

Elusive Traveler
Lutra canadensis
Consider yourself lucky if you see an oter on the river. North American river otters mostly fish for a living, so they're more likely to be found where fish are plentiful.

River Rat
Castor Canadensis
In summer, along quieter stretches of the Nenana, beavers from nearby ponds help themselves to brush along the river's edge. Perhaps adding to their stockpile of winter dinners.

Swift-Water Specialist
Cinclus mexicanus
American dippers will dive without hesitation into water you'd find it difficult to stand in. These amazing songbirds swim or walk in fast water, fully submerged, hunting for insect larvae or small fish."
