King James 1st stopped at Royston on his journey from Scotland to London after the death of Elizabeth 1st. He stopped for three days in order to hunt. After that first successful hunting trip, the king returned on several occasions.
The hunting lodge in Kneesworth Street that he occupied is known as the Old Palace. The front half of the Old Palace was demolished in the 18th century for road widening purposes, but the rear half and chimneys are still visible. Several other buildings used by his court are still standing in Kneesworth Street.
The history of the area is described on the information board opposite the Old Palace.
