U.S. Army Hospital Car; A Hospital on Wheels; When soldiers returned from World War II, some of them rode in hospital cars like this one. These cars had space for medical staff and a galley (kitchen). Steam from the locomotive heated the car, sterilized the bed pans and provided hot water for cooking, washing and coffee. The cars also carried an ice cooler to keep the temperature cool in the summer and kerosene stove to keep the temperature warm in the winter. The galley was capable of preparing and serving 200 meals a day. This car is one of 100 purchased by the government to transport soldiers between medical facilities. Brigham City, Utah was the site of such a facility, the Bushnell Hospital. Inside the car, soldiers received medial care on their way to the hospital. The interior of this car has been partially restored.
