Originally two monumental towers of Bernini was to stand on either side of Basilica. These towers were never executed above the line of the facade because it was discovered that the ground was not sufficiently stable to bear the weight. Instead, Giuseppe Valadier designed two clocks from 1786-1790 on both side of front facade. The one on the left, showing Rome time (exact one), is called the Italian clock. This clock is electrically operated since 1931, with its oldest bell dating to 1288.
