Saint Andrew was the brother of Saint Peter. He like his brother was one of Jesus' disciples and also a fisherman. It is reported that he preached over a large area following the death of Jesus including Asia Minor and in Scythia, along the Black Sea as far as the Volga and Kiev. Hence he became a patron saint of Ukraine, Romania and Russia. He is also the patron saint of Greece and Scotland. Andrew is said to have been martyred by crucifixion at Patras (Patrae) in Achaea.
