Father Luke came to Bend in 1910 from County Cork, Ireland. He was a member of the Irish Capuchin order of Catholic priests and started the St. Francis parish. Father Luke’s nethew, Dominic O’Connor, was also a Capuchin priest who later came to Bend in 1922. Father Dominic had already made a name for himself before coming to Oregon. He was a Irish national hero for his deeds in support of the Irish Republic. The work of Fathers Luke and Dominic in the community laid the groundwork for the future St. Francis School.

There is also an Oregon Historic Markers waymark (WM91J) at this location.
