The First United Methodist Church was founded in 1831 with its first church building constructed in 1833. During the Civil War this first location was used as a hospital for two years. After outgrowing this first location it was sold in 1878. A second church building was constructed beginning in 1879 and completed 1880. The congregation expanded greatly during the 1880s and 1890s. Then tragedy struck and the building burned to the ground on December 15, 1895. The oldest part of the current building date to 1896 with the current Romanesque sanctuary begun in 1899 and completed in 1900. Over the years the church building has been expanded to meet the needs of the congregation. As other church moved to the west into newer areas of the city the First United Methodist Church remained committed remaining in the Little Rock downtown area.
