The house was built for Emily Carr’s parents in 1863-1864 with them moving in on April 1, 1864. Emily was born on December 13, 1871, and grew up in the house with a brother and 4 older sisters. After the parents died in 1886 (Mother) and 1888 (Father) the house remained in family hands until the final surviving family members (Emily and her sister, Alice) sold it in 1938. The house went through 2 more ownership changes and by 1964 was in danger of being leveled. A local Member of Parliament, David Walter Groos, bought the property and it was designated a CNHS that same year. After the Emily Carr Foundation, created in 1967 by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the Federal Government came to an agreement to share the cost of restoration, the legal description for the house and property was altered, and the property is conveyed to the Emily Carr Foundation.

What is this person famous for?:

FROM The website for the Emily Carr House: Emily Carr is one of Canada's greatest and most loved artists. Feeling a spiritual connection with her subjects, Emily Carr painted both the landscape and native villages of Western Canada in a unique and modern style that was rejected during its time of production. After years of travel throughout the forests of British Columbia, failing health caused her to remain close to home where she wrote seven books based on her life. Today Emily Carr is highly regarded throughout the world and considered a national icon in Canada.
